SEMA 2017 | Day Two

Day two at SEMA continued and Paul, Matt and Nolan join in. I don’t know why I thought it would be a great idea to actually wake up early and show up at the Convention Center before 8:00 a.m. to cover the outside before they opened the flood gates. I also thought it would be a good idea to take advantage of good natural-light. Yeah, this did not work as planned and even though we got there early (compared to other years), it was way past opening time.

On a personal note, I decided to bring a tripod since I had an interesting time shooting wide-open with no filter and that purple fringing was kicking my ass; at least more than I would like to see. It did feel like a suicide mission going in with a tripod though. I stopped and chatted with a guy shooting video with a wide rolling-tripod and I gave him props for maneuvering around the halls. He just told me, “You have no idea man.”

After a quick stop so that Paul could pick up his credentials, our day started at the Lexus booth.

3GT Racing Lexus RC F GT3 competing in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. I loved the aggressive line of the car. I was not aware that Scott Pruett was splitting duties piloting the car with Sage Karam. Unfortunately, the best result in the 2017 season was 5th place at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

Also at the H&R booth was this BMW M2 on Vossen ML-X3 wheels coming in at 19”x9.5”/20”x10.5” (F/R). For being such a small car, the M2 aggressive bodylines sure know how to take big wheels.

I managed to get to the Ford booth, which is always packed.

I am guessing they allowed people to write on this RS at the show. Not sure if it was done there or prior to the show.

One car that was creating a lot of buzz was Ken Block’s Ford Mustang dubbed Hoonicorn V2. The Hoonicorn has a new turbo set up that is feeding 21 lbs. of boost into the 6.7-liter methanol engine and 1,400 angry horsepower sent to all the wheels. This is surely one crazy build, and a very recognizable one across the spectrum of automotive enthusiast.

SEMA 2017 Day 1 - projectonethirty
This 2018 Ford Expedition “Baja-Forged Adventurer” really grabbed my attention. I really can’t explain what it is but just something about how well it flows that it looks like something that came out of the showroom. (even though it is lifted and it has bigger wheels). Maybe the color?

The ROUSH 729 is a custom-built Mustang producing; you guessed it, 729 horsepower from its supercharged engine. The ROUSH 729 did not wanted to be left out and joined the wide body extravaganza. Wheels are Vossen and come in at 20×10” and 20×11” (F/R).

One of my favorite booths, the Brembo booth never disappoints. NASCAR brake system.

SEMA 2017 Day 1 - projectonethirty
Compared to the F1 brake system, the NASCAR brake system is much larger. Then again, Formula 1 cars are about 1,695 lbs lighter than a NASCAR car (almost half).

The engine is a 4.0-liter and it is producing around 400bhp. The body had been widened by what they call a race spec chassis setting and it is riding on KW Hydraulic lift system to lift the front suspension when needed.

If I recall, I was told that it normally takes about 7 months to build a car like this and my gawd is it worth the wait. Everything in the car has been worked on, nothing has been overlooked. I think this car is one of my favorite cars of the show. If they were to ask me which one I would take home, hmm this one right here.

Magnus Walker’ a current project. I am loving the seats. Funny thing is he was there taking photos with fans and one of them who wanted to take a photo with him did not know how to operate the phone-camera, neither did the friend taking the photo. Magnus had to show them. Maybe they were star-struck and forgot everything.

Before the show started, we got to chat with Ryan from RyWire and we swapped stories about just how crazy it is to get a car ready for SEMA. We were eager to see what the car looked like and as always it did not disappoint. The S2000 is very wide but Ryan managed to keep the lines very smooth making them seem almost OEM.
